Portugal Flag
The flag of Portugal features two vertical bands: a green band on the hoist side (left) and a larger red band on the fly side (right). Centered over the boundary between the two colors is the national coat of arms, which includes a complex shield and a navigational armillary sphere. The green is often interpreted as symbolizing hope or the Portuguese Revolution of 1910, while the red represents the blood of those who died defending the nation. The coat of arms reflects Portugal's rich maritime history and national identity: the shield contains five small blue shields representing the first king’s victory over the Moors, and seven gold castles symbolizing the expansion of Portuguese territory. The armillary sphere behind the shield symbolizes Portugal’s age of exploration and global influence during the 15th and 16th centuries. Officially adopted on June 30, 1911, the flag is a powerful symbol of Portugal’s history, resilience, and pride.
