Luxembourg Flag

The flag of Luxembourg consists of three horizontal stripes of red, white, and light blue, from top to bottom. It was officially adopted in 1972, though its origins date back to 1845, and it is based on the colors of the Grand Duke's coat of arms. Each color carries traditional meanings: red symbolizes the bravery and strength of the people, white stands for peace and honesty, and light blue represents perseverance and the sky. While it resembles the flag of the Netherlands, Luxembourg's flag has lighter blue and different proportions (Luxembourg’s is typically longer). Despite this similarity, the flag is a key symbol of national identity and independence for Luxembourg, one of Europe’s smallest but wealthiest nations. The country also uses a separate civil ensign (a flag for ships), which features a red lion on blue and white stripes.
