Malawi Flag
The flag of Malawi consists of three horizontal stripes of black, red, and green, with a red rising sun featuring 31 rays centered in the black stripe. Adopted upon independence in 1964, the flag’s colors are inspired by the Pan-African flag, symbolizing African unity and liberation. The black stripe represents the people of Africa, the red stands for the blood shed in the struggle for independence, and the green symbolizes Malawi’s natural beauty and vegetation. The rising sun signifies the dawn of freedom and hope for the continent, highlighting Malawi’s role as one of the first African nations to gain independence. Although the flag was briefly changed between 2010 and 2012, the original design was restored due to its strong symbolic meaning and popularity. Today, Malawi’s flag remains a proud emblem of the country’s history, resilience, and identity.
