New Zealand Flag
The flag of New Zealand features a blue field with the Union Jack in the upper hoist corner, symbolizing the country’s historical ties to the United Kingdom. To the right of the Union Jack are four red stars with white borders, representing the Southern Cross constellation, which is visible in the southern hemisphere and signifies New Zealand’s geographic location. The blue background symbolizes the sea and sky surrounding the islands. Officially adopted in 1902, the flag reflects New Zealand’s colonial heritage, its connection to Britain, and its unique position in the South Pacific. There have been discussions about changing the flag to better represent the country’s indigenous Māori culture and independent identity, but as of now, this remains the national flag.
