The flag of Nigeria consists of three vertical stripes of equal width—two green stripes on the sides and a white stripe in the center. The green stripes symbolize Nigeria’s rich natural wealth and lush vegetation, reflecting the country’s agricultural heritage. The white stripe represents peace and unity among Nigeria’s diverse peoples. Designed by Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi in 1959, the flag was officially adopted on October 1, 1960, when Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule. Its simple yet powerful design embodies the nation’s hopes for prosperity, harmony, and growth.
